In order to battle the number of animals needing care on the island, Olivia started the Roatan Animal Shelter. Making education part of a more compassionate approach to island animals, she created a shelter that helps animals in urgent care as well as making a long term change.

The urgent need was to provide a safe, caring environment in order to rehabilitate these suffering animals with the hope of being adopted. They have helped hundreds of cats and dogs to be spayed and adopted. There is no vet onsite at the shelter, and so they hire a local vet, Dr. Calderon, to come once a week.

“15 years ago I moved to Roatan and after seeing the stray animals sick and hungry on the streets, I realized that a shelter was needed where they could receive proper veterinary care and be adopted afterwards. We rely only on the kindness of donors to pay all the bills as rent, electricity, vet care.”
